The 2013 ORDO covers the complete Liturgical Calendar of the Church according to the 1962 Missale Romanum & 1962 Brevarium Romanum. This edition of the Ordo for the Traditional Latin Mass is the easiest to use - it is very “user-friendly”!

For any given day, the 2013 ORDO contains a clear and simple listing of the feast to be celebrated with its liturgical rank (1, 2, 3, or 4) and color (Green, White, Red, Rose, White, Black, Violet), together with the liturgical rubrics to be observed.

An excellent feature of the 2013 ORDO is the inclusion of the special plenary indulgences and prayers that come from the 1962 Indulgentiarum Doctrina, as well as important documents from Rome pertaining to the celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass (Extraordinary Form).

The 2013 ORDO is a must-have for each sacristy and for every priest celebrating the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite according to the Liturgical Books of 1962 promulgated by Blessed John XXIII .

The 2013 ORDO explains the use of the Divine Office in the Extraordinary Form and is very helpful to anyone wanting to understand the usus antiquior.

Missale Romanum 1962
Editio iuxta Typicam

This is the first printing of the Missale Romanum 1962 edition with ecclesiastical approval for quite some time. Several priests were involved in the publishing of this Missale. One could say, quite literally, that the experience of many years of daily celebration of the Holy Mass has been incorporated in its design.

With great attention to detail, care was taken to have an easily readable font, clear design and a refined setting. The margins should be large enough and the paper smooth.

It is hoped that this new “old Missal” will not only give the glory to God, but also delight many priests and faithful.

The high quality features of this beautifully produced Missale Romanum include: 1224 pages with gilt edges, 9” x 12 1/4”, about 2 1/8"thick, 5/8” handmade plastic tabs on both sides, bordered bands, cover in burgundy split leather with gold stamping, and includes a sturdy Missal slipcase.

Please note that since this Missal was printed in Germany, the propers for the United States or Canada are not included.

Having a Requiem Mass Missal is quite helpful rather than using the Missale Romanum 1962. Because of the reduced number of texts needed, i.e. propers, readings and prayers, everything you need is close at hand. The Order of the Requiem Mass is different than that of a regular Mass making a dedicated book much easier to follow. Finally, the lighter and thinner book is easier to handle during the absolution at the coffin or catafalque.

We present to you a new Requiem Missal [”Missae Defunctorum”] with the rubrics of 1962, printed on fine ivory-colored paper, put very clearly in a comfortable font size. The three bands of black satin ribbons are bounded at both ends in leather. The high quality of this book is evident binding, the tabs, which are made of leather, and the gilt-edged pages. The hardcover is black leather and measures approximately 9 ¼”x 12 ¼” with gold stamping. Included with your Missale Defunctorum 1962, are the matching Requiem Mass cards, because some prayers are different from the usual Mass.

Mastering the Rubrics of the 1962 Missal DVD & Booklet View larger image

This is the most popular booklet ever for learning the Traditional Latin Mass (1962 Missale Romanum).  One does not have to be an expert in the rubrics to understand Father Schmitz’s lessons in learning the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. While his text is straightforward it is also accurate and succinct.

This newly typeset edition of Fr. Schmitz’s guide for priests and seminarians in learning the Tridentine Latin Mass features red ink for rubrics, blue ink for footnotes, and black ink for the text of the Mass and for other instructions.

Dedicated with profound admiration and gratitude to the Most Reverand John M. McNarama, D.D., Auxilary bishop of Washington, who rejoices that he has ordained more than two thousand men to stand at the altar of God.

All sin is an offense against God and a rejection of his perfect love and justice. Yet, Jesus makes a distinction between two types of sins. We call the most serious and grave sins, mortal sins. Mortal sins destroy the grace of God in the heart of the sinner. By their very grave nature, a mortal sin cuts our relationship off from God and turns man away from his creator. St. Paul’s letter to the Hebrews tell us that “if we sin willfully after having the knowledge of the truth, there is now left no sacrifice for sins” (Hebrews 10:26).

The second type of sin, venial sin, that of less grave matter, does not cut us off from Christ. However, venial sin does weaken grace in the soul and damages our relationship with God. A person who frequently indulges in venial sin is very likely to collapse into mortal sin if they persist in their evil ways.

In order for a sin to be mortal, it must meet three conditions:

  * Mortal sin is a sin of grave matter
  * Mortal sin is committed with full knowledge of the sinner
  * Mortal sin is committed with deliberate consent of the sinner

This means that mortal sins cannot be done “accidentally.” A person who commits a mortal sin is one who knows that their sin is wrong, but still deliberately commits the sin anyway. This means that mortal sins are “premeditated” by the sinner and thus are truly a rejection of God’s law and love.

This soft-cover volume contains all the Epistle and Gospel readings in English in LARGE 16 point bold type print for Sundays and Feast Days. This book was originally printed in 1893 but has been updated to conform with the Missale Romanum 1962.

In the celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass, (Missale Romanum 1962) the priest reads the Epistle and Gospel at the Altar in Latin, but before the Sermon/Homily the priest customarily re-reads the Epistle and Gospel in the vernacular for the benefit of the faithful. The translation provided here follows the traditional English translation from the Douay-Rheims (Challoner) edition, that has been revered as the English translation most faithful to the official Latin Vulgate edition of St. Jerome.

This item is a must for any priest celebrating the Traditional Latin Mass. Order your copy of the Epistles and Gospels for Pulpit Use at the low price of $20.00 (USD), plus shipping and handling charges.

How to Serve View larger image

The ever increasing interest in the Liturgical Traditions of the Church gives rise to the need for adequately trained altar servers and what better way to assist than to resurrect this classic altar boy manual! This famous handbook is an invaluable resource for all altar boys from beginning to advanced.

Thanks to the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius in Chicago, whose religious brothers serve the Traditional Latin Mass daily, we have been able to include multiple high quality digital images of the positions and actions of the servers in this newly typeset edition.

Though written for Instructors, this manual can also be used for home study, schools and sacristies. Dom Matthew Britt begins by offering specific instructions on common ceremonial actions, including how to make the proper bow, how to light the candles, and how to carry the Missal.

He also walks the servers step-by-step through Low Mass (with one or two servers), High Mass, Solemn High Masses, Nuptial and Requiem Masses, Vespers and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

Contains more than 24 precise diagrams showing the various actions and positions of Acolytes, Thurifer, Master of Ceremonies, Sub-Deacon, and Deacon. Includes servers responses for the 1962 Latin Mass. How to Serve is a brief and clear manual from 1934 that is simply the best book of its kind. It will once again become the standard reference for acolytes, handing on to young servers the disciplines necessary for reverent Catholic ceremonies.

Rev. Joseph W. Kavanagh, author of The Altar Boys Ceremonial observes that every altar boy

“should realize that…he is , after the priest, and in the absence of other priests or Sacred Ministers, the closest one in the whole church to our Divine Savior in the Blessed Sacrament. Occupying this very important position in his parish, an Altar Boy s conduct should be exemplary at all times and in all places.”

Altar Cards for High Mass with Incense View larger image

When celebrating the Traditional Latin Mass with incense, every priest will appreciate this set of altar cards which include the Offertory incense prayers.

Among the more difficult of the prayers of the Mass to memorize are the prayers used at the Offertory incensation. This unique set of altar cards, with large and clear print, makes it simple to execute the more difficult ceremonies of the Sung Mass in the Extraordinary Form. An invaluable resource for priests beginning to celebrate the Roman Mass according to the 1962 Missale Romanum.

These altar cards include all of the usual prayers, including the Aufer a nobis, Oramus te, Ab illo benedicaris, as well as the prayers used at the incensation at the Offertory.

Blessing of Incense

Per intercessiónem beáti Michaëlis Archángeli, stantis a dextris altáris incénsi, et ómnium electórum suórum, incénsum istud dignétur Dóminus bene + dícere, et in odórem suavitátis accípere. Per Christum Dóminum nostrum. Amen.

Incensation of the Oblata

Incénsum istud, a te benedíctum, ascéndat ad te, Dómine, et descéndat super nos misericórdia tua.

Incensation of the Altar

Dirigátur, Dómine, oratio mea, sicut incénsum in conspéctu tuo: elevatio mánuum mearum sacrificium vespertínum. Pone, Dómine, custódiam ori meo, et óstium circumstántiæ lábiis meis: ut non declínet cor meum in verba malítiæ, ad excusándas excusatiónes in peccátis.

Returning the Thurible

Accéndat in nobis Dóminus ignem sui amóris, et flammam ætérne caritátis. Amen.

Celebration of the Mass View larger image

After having been out of print for over 30 years, this indispensable rubrical resource for the Extraordinary Form is now again available!

Author of several liturgically-related works, J.B. O’Connell is noted for his ability to clearly explain the complex ceremonial workings of the Roman Rite, particularly for the celebration of Mass by the priest.

The Celebration of Mass is valued by clergy and laity alike not only for its concise handling of the general rubrics, but also for its chapters that briefly describe the history of the development of the traditional Roman Mass, liturgical law, the proper understanding of the force of custom, the importance of the decisions made by the Sacred Congregation of Rites and the opinions of fellow rubricians.

O’Connell’s last revision made of The Celebration of Mass was printed in 1964 after a span of nearly 10 years from his last edition, making it one of the few rubrical books completely in conformity with the new code of rubrics implemented in 1960 that comprise the 1962 edition of the Missale Romanum.

Fully indexed and beautifully hardbound in dark green with gold embossing on the cover and spine.

“Whilst preparing the most recent edition of Adrian Fortescue’s Ceremonies of the Roman Rite Described I added to the bibliography the 1964 edition of Canon J. B. O’Connell’s classic The Celebration of Mass noting that, in fact, this was the only book published in English at the time which conformed exactly to the 1962 editio typica of the Missale Romanum (which itself only appeared from the Vatican Press early in 1963 – printing and binding having been stopped and re-started in order to accommodate Bl. John XXIII’s insertion of St. Joseph into the Canon of the Mass). The 1962 edition of Ceremonies of the Roman Rite Described was, therefore, published before the 1962 Missale Romanum and missed some rubrical modifications that appeared only in the editio typica.”

“But Canon O’Connell – undeterred, interestingly, by the approach of an ecumenical Council (on the Conciliar Liturgical Commission of which he was a peritus at the time) – proceeded with a thorough revision of his own comprehensive textbook on how to celebrate Mass. It received its imprimatur less than a month before the promulgation of Sacrosanctum concilium and appeared in print in the USA the following year whilst Fr. Bugnini was busy organising the infamous work of his Consilium.”

“Needless to say, this fourth edition of O’Connell’s book was quickly found to be redundant (though Canon O’Connell prepared a four page supplement which was printed and sold with the book listing many of the early changes made immediately following the Council) and many traditionalists have missed its importance because of its date.”

“Yet, for priests and seminarians learning how to celebrate the traditional rite of Mass, it is the basic textbook, more so, dare I say than even Ceremonies of the Roman Rite Described. Ceremonies is certainly the basic manual for all involved in the celebration of the traditional rites, from sacristans to celebrants, but The Celebration of Mass is the textbook every seminarian and priest ought to have studied carefully in order to understand not only the ceremonial of the celebration of Mass, but the nature of the liturgy and the requirements of liturgical law, the rules occurrence and concurrence, the intricacies of the calendar, etc.”

“The book does have much to offer laity involved in the celebration of the traditional liturgy, most especially its “Synopsis of the Ceremonies of Solemn Mass” (Appendix A) which lays out the respective duties of the celebrant, deacon, subdeacon and MC for each part of the Mass in parallel columns. The synopsis does contain one error (spotted by my longstanding friend Mr. Michael Pearce of Sydney) in that its instruction that the subdeacon lower the paten, genuflect etc., should be placed during the Pater and not at the Per quem haec omnia.”

“It had long been my hope that O’Connell’s invaluable book would be reprinted and I am delighted to report that this has recently taken place in the USA. The worthy hardback reprint (alas, not a new edition) is being distributed by Preserving Christian Publications. Its availability will further enhance the intelligent and faithful celebration of the traditional Mass according to the typical edition of the 1962 Missale Romanum.”

Learning the New Breviary View larger image

This is the guide published in 1962 for priests praying the Divine Office, according to the liturgical books of Blessed John XXIII.

The title word “new” is rather misleading today, as it actually refers to the new code of rubrics promulgated in July 1960 for the traditional Roman Breviary.

In this handy, concise and easy-to-read book, Fr. Hausmann leads the reader step by step through each of the 8 canonical hours, their contents, special particulars, and how they are said, all the while providing important tips on how to recite the Divine Office with a correct liturgical spirit.

An indispensable book for any Catholic who would like to become better acquainted with the traditional Roman Breviary, the Church’s liturgical treasure that in connection with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass forms the Church’s official daily prayer.

A great gift for seminarians, perfect also for any cleric or laic who might want to brush up on their breviary rubrics!

The Canons Regular of St. John Cantius was founded in 1998 by Reverend C. Frank Phillips, C.R., with the blessing of Francis Cardinal George, Archbishop of Chicago, as a Roman Catholic religious community of men dedicated to the restoration of the sacred in the context of parish ministry. Its mission is to help Catholics rediscover a profound sense of the sacred through solemn liturgies, devotions, sacred art, sacred music, as well as instruction in Church heritage, catechetics, and Catholic culture. This mission is reflected in the community’s motto Instaurare Sacra - To Restore the Sacred. To learn more about the Canons Regular of Saint John Cantius, visit us on the web at:

Altar Cards - Full Color - Gold Embossed View larger image

When celebrating the Traditional Latin Mass, three Altar Cards are placed on the Altar to assist the memory of the priest in saying the prayers of the Mass of All Ages. These prayers are printed on three cards and placed at the middle of the altar and on the Epistle and Gospel corners of the altar.

The Missal of Pope Pius V calls the large Altar Card the “Tabella Secretarum” (tit. xx), and it contains prayers such as the “Gloria in excelsis,” the “Credo in unum Deum,” as well as the prayers of the Offertory and Consecration. The Altar Card placed on the Gospel corner provides the text of the Last Gospel, which is recited at the end of Mass.  For the sake of symmetry, the last Altar Card is placed on the Epistle corner and provides the prayer “Deus qui humanae substantiae,” which the priest says as he blesses the water. It also gives the prayer for the “Lavabo,” said as the priest washes his hands.

This lovely set of Altar Cards is printed on heavy cardstock and can be beautifully framed to match any altar. We are happy to offer this set of three Altar cards at the very low price of $40.00 (USD), plus shipping and handling charges.

Biretta View larger image

The Biretta is the square cap with three ridges or peaks on its upper surface, worn by clerics of all grades from cardinals downwards.

The use of the Biretta is prescribed by the rubrics both at Mass and in other ecclesiastical functions. Cardinals wear red birettas, bishops violet, but priests, deacons, subdeacons and seminarians wear black birettas. It may be said in general that the biretta is worn in processions and when seated.

The liturgical biretta has three peaks, and the ‘peak-less’ corner should be worn on the left side of the head. However, in some religious orders or in some dioceses, the biretta may have four peaks.

The Cantius Webstore is happy to offer you our three-cornered collapsible Biretta for the low price of $75.00 each. This makes a wonderful gift for your favorite priest or seminarian. Get your Biretta today!
